57.5 Degrees of Pain
What I meant was that it's not a linear relationship that converges. I think the consistency of male advantage was discussed on The Science of Sport podcast recently.

Intriguingly that you mention science of sport, he seems to be about the only person I've seen comment (maybe I'm looking in the wrong places!!) that hasn't said outright it's not legit. Though his overall position seems to be "I don't know"!

Why would it suddenly appear at a lot longer distances? For that to happen, the factor would have to only apply there which I'd very much doubt.

Anyway a 9% difference for men Vs women (based on the HM difference) would mean the mens marathon record should be around 1:59:15. The closer gap for the HM could probably be explained by pacing.

Well that's the position based on the facts we know. If you already think everyone is doping, this is only going to be proof of that for you.

Interestingly the gap in percentage terms is almost the same as when Radcliffe broke the record (7.79%). The changed to 8.41% when Tergat broke the mens record later that year.

Very different landscapes in terms of the depth of male and female distance running cohorts when PR set her record though.

If you're saying the men's side was deeper then, well that applies now as well. The women's record only started dropping recently.

Yes, mens is still deeper. But women's hadn't reached anywhere near the critical mass that it has today back when Paula was winning. She was certainly ahead of her time.

The depth of the East African women now is far superior to what it was in Paula's heyday.

If we had reached a critical mass in the marathon, Paula Radcliffe wouldn't still be 6th all time...

Unless and until presented with evidence to the contrary, I'm happy to accept that the recent leaps in women's distance running world records are a reflection of advances in opportunity for East African women to participate in the sport, with access to funding, facilities, equipment, and relatable role models.
