I'm ringing my mum's provider as we seem to be paying about three times the most expensive rate published on their website. We've been using them for nearly 5 years. They've been really good, but I'm worried we've been overpaying.

Puzzled at the different approaches, I'm pretty sure that here (Lancashire) they are offering us one free, though it was my wife who spoke to them.

I remember that social services paid for it for a while, after which we had to take over. There were various payment options to go for depending on how much you paid for the equipment in full or in part and rented it

Ah, the difference is that mum has remote response element to her service so that if she calls the alarm a carer is sent out instead of a key holder being notified.

We had issued with wearing the fob thing at first, but thats one thing the carers ensure is worn on each of their visits and so the non earing problem has been largely resolved.

jda, do you not have PoA, I would have thought that gave you the chance to step in but actually then that gives you and your wife a tough call to make against an individuals wishes which isnt easy

Yes we have the welfare PoA (finally!) but it only comes into effect on a doctor’s say-so, and he’s simply not there yet.

ah, right. I didnt appreciate that but I can see it makes sense so that families are not a bit too hasty in any actions

Does anyone have any tips for getting information about patients from a hospital? Dad's been in since Friday and my Mum can’t find out what’s happening. Dad is too tired and confused to know or explain but calls her a couple of times a day. The hospital phones ring out, go to recorded messages (no capacity to leave messages) or appear non operational. It’s causing Mum (and all of us to be honest) considerable worry as we have no information. I appreciate they’re incredibly busy. Thanks for any suggestions.

My only suggestion would be to keep trying at different times. I had this recently but when I did get through the nurse I spoke to was happy to talk for ages.

It also tends to be worse at weekends as they can have fewer staff working (depending on the type of ward).

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
