It’s only Monday and I’m already terrified about the carnage that’s going to descend on SoFi next weekend.

Oh absolutely - it will be one of the greatest sporting comebacks if Alex Smith takes a single NFL snap. From a human perspective, it is wonderful

... that he can even walk. But they are paying him nearly $30m a year while having Dwayne Haskins starting.

I think from a cap perspective, if they cut Smith, they have to take the full cost of the contract now rather than spreading it over the length of the deal. They can’t afford to take the hit now.

I doubt he will ever make it onto the field but I would love to be wrong

Surely teams must have some sort of insurance to underwrite situations that Smith has been in? It is a massive achievement for him to have rehabilitated to the point where he has made the roster this year. Surely if it was for purely financial reasons that the team kept him around wouldn't they have kept him on IR all the time. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get on the field competitively again - he must be some kinda motivated mofo to get to this point.

They do in baseball (prince fielder cost a lot of Lloyd’s underwriters a few $s) and Mahomes has something in his unusual contract for insurance.

In the NFL, it typically seems to be the players buying the insurance as the contracts are typically team friendly and allow them to cut the player without too much future payment. The signing bonus is spent money “dead money”

Baseball ones are close to fully guaranteed so risk lies more with the franchise and therefore seems more insurance bought by them

Would have to get him go accept being on the IR wouldn't they? Can't cut him as too big a cap hit (bigger than if they just keep him).

TBH I'd be a bit nervous about him playing. Is his leg up to taking repeated hits?

Game 7 tonight. Judgement day for the Clips.

In. Other. News.

Still an outside chance of the Mariners limping into postseason. Should be a lock for the Padres. And at least the D Backs and the Nationals are pushing the Red Sox hard for the ‘worst team in the major leagues’ title.

Kudos to the splendid Buster Olney who said the Sox were a shoo-in as early as game 3.

It's weird that I still see the Clippers as the obviously better team. A game 7 says otherwise and this article makes some good arguments for the Nuggets.

The LA Times has been less generous. What a wasted opportunity.
