There were six WR selected in this year's first round. The most since 2015 when Amari Cooper (4th overall) was drafted by the Raiders. The last WR picked first in the NFL draft was Keyshawn Johnson (NY Jets) in 1996 such is the emphasis on a QB for the lowest ranked side in the league.

I watched a documentary on Jimmy Johnson some months back. He spoke about how unpopular he was with the Dallas fans after replacing Tom Landry, trading Herschel Walker to the Vikings and getting a 1-15 record in 1989. At the time, everyone thought he had destroyed the Cowboys but they subsequently benefitted from many excellent draft picks, winning 3/4 Superbowls in the early 1990's. Despite the NFL actively engaging in parity, a bad team doesn't become great overnight. Some shrewd trading is necessary especially for those hovering around play-off contention whose position in the draft doesn't always guarantee the best college players. |

There was a lot of talk about this being the best WR 'class' in decades. A bad team doesn't become great overnight sure, but I certainly expect Cincinatti to be less abject next season than this. When the Pats 'only' beat them 34-13 (or thereabouts) the Globe reacted like it was a loss. |

No surprise. A pity for the UK fans but understandable. Elsewhere, I see that Don Shula has passed away, aged 90. The coach with the most NFL career wins and the only perfect season. I started watching the NFL when Dan Marino was with him at Miami. Not a force as they were but still great to watch. |

Tattogate even made today's Grauniad! America always runs back home when threatened so not surprised that Wembley games were dropped. They have a habit of dumping any business outside mainland USA for the flimsiest of reasons, not that Covid-19 is a flimsy reason but it's a long-established practice. Delta airlines own 49% of Virgin Altlantic for example, has there been any talk of them supplying further investment to the Beardy one? Not a chance, accepting that they have their own issues in the States with the airline business there on it's knees. Contrast that with Boeing raising $25 Billion in emergency funding to protect ongoing business without a bailout! |
