I have seen that you can get sports drinks which have double the carbs eg OTE super carbs and mountain fuel to name a couple. Has anyone tried them? Are they OK? They are quite expensive so thought I would get some feedback before purchasing to try. See below for why I am looking at these…..

I’ve had a lot of 💩problems lately so don’t like taking on food/gels during events.

I have been ok with just sports drinks (in terms of getting my energy) for marathon and 6 hour but I did a 100km at the weekend (see blog) and started to come a cropper from just over 6 hours. It wasn’t a particularly hot day so I wasn’t drinking a lot. I did have a few gels but didn’t want to get carried away. I worked out that over the course of the 100km I had just over 1000 calories which is clearly not enough.

There’s a thing called super starch or something. I think branded UCAN maybe that’s something to look in to?

Thanks, I knew about Maurten, beta fuel but not precision hydration . I was looking for feedback on them. I read somewhere that the M one was a horrid texture.

Probably a silly question, but the immediate thought that springs to mind is, that for drinks you are mixing up yourself, if you want double carbs, can you not just add 2 sachets (or 1.5 or whatever) of powder rather than 1 ?

Does the taste become too strong, or texture too gloopy, or do these "double-carb" ones actually have a different mix of types of carbs ?

Obviously a different story for pre-made gels, where the SiS Beta Fuel ones seem to have highest carbs per sachet.

IMHO if you struggle to take on fuel, then taking extra strength products won't work at all. If you're sensitive to say 30g of carbs then you'd be more likely to have difficulty taking 60g of carbs. However, you can train your system to get used to taking on fuel but you'd need to start with lower concentration amounts and gradually build on that.

My stomach is sensitive, no bowel problems, but if I try and take on too high an amount of carbs then I get stomach acid and then struggle to take even water on board.

Hi Gus, I think they would be too strong but I think these double ones mix diff types of carbs for better absorption. I read somewhere that the M ones were really gloopy.

So I am a big fan of Tailwind, never had any gut issues on it no matter how much I drink. Done 100 mile races pretty much using only tailwind and the occasional handful of haribo at a check point. It isn't "double strength", but obv you can just add as much powder as you want.

Thank you @Shades I used to be OK but now I struggle. I am ok with sports drinks but solids cause problems. However, the amount I’m drinking is not providing enough calories.

I think I may be getting sorted though as since I’ve started taking 2 immodium 90 minutes before then another just before I seem to have been OK. Only done this the last 3 races but been ok. However, I don’t want to go crazy with solids plus drinking all the calories is much easier than dealing with opening packets etc.
