I've been duolingoing for just over a year (in Spannish) and am wondering if anyone has used any of the free AI apps for converstaion? Learning phrases on the phone / pc is all well & good but I'm assuming the best way to learn is actually via speaking it.

I was asked by a waiter in Spain in April (so admittedly early days) to "Pleas speak English", but at least I tried :)

I've set my home language to French, and started learning Spanish from French. I'm still doing it from English too, but I'm quite enjoying revising more basic Spanish and French at the same time.

I've done a few maths lessons too, but not yet tried music.

Happens to us all from time to time, I think! I did not too badly on my recent trip to Spain. The lad who came in to clean our room asked me to speak English, but that was because he'd worked in Dublin for a year ("It rained every day") and wanted to practise his English.

I haven't used online resources for conversation, but going to a class where a lot of the activities involve having conversations has made all the difference for me.

I'm sure conversation classes are a great help, but haven't found any Spanish conversation classes locally. I do always try Spanish when we are there, and listen to Spanish radio on the internet. Some presenters speak so fast I can barely pick out one word in ten!

I have started French conversation classes (with real people not AI) and they definitely help. My French is probably good enough that Duolingo doesn't really teach me much and I need to do other stuff. I've also now started listening to French podcasts/reading French books. I credit the French I learned at school rather than Duo, although Duo did at least get me remembering it before diving into the harder stuff.

For Spanish I did a couple of terms of evening classes back in the day and probably have now got a bit further with Duo than I managed back then, but I feel nowhere near as confident as I do in French even though my scores in each are roughly the same (130 French v 128 Spanish).

I am tempted to go back and try Spanish from French once I've finished Spanish from English.

I have found it easier to watch youtube/netflix or listen to Spanish speakers from places like Peru or Bolivia where Spanish is a second language, or from central American countries like Costa Rica or Nicaragua where people seem to speak quite slowly.

A lot of Spanish speakers say Caribbean Spanish is really hard to follow, but Chilean seems to be the most commonly mentioned as tough.
