For reference, Ben Foakes' dad was a professional football referee. Some sporting pedigree in this team.

A clue that will pretty much give it away - the person in question was a sprint & conditioning coach at Widnes and later Wigan in the 1980s, for people like Martin Offiah, Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards etc.

Yes, Bill Hartley won a 4x400m European gold in 1974, and later combined running the family's garden centre with being on of the coaching team at Wigan. He himself only played cricket at school.
