The county championship used to be dull too. I remember watching Boycs bat all through a (admittedly rain-interrupted) day at Chelmsford for 49. I got Boyc’s autobiography signed by the great man himself at Clarke’s Stationers and Bookshop, must be circa 1985/6 from memory. Still have it and placed next to Nasser Hussain’s autobio.

When I was at Scarborough for a county game last year, boycott was sat at a table behind me signing his book. There weren’t really many interested punters and then it rained and he scarpered.

Boycs was just before my time but Tavare was probably about as boring wasn't he?

I don't really remember Boycott playing, though I have vague recollections of the controversies like the rebel tour and finally getting the heave-ho from the Yorkshire side.
