I think, back in the day, footballers were pretty local chaps. Professionals are Professionals. Have boots, will travel. |

I have very fond memories of watching Notts v Derbyshire in the County Championship in 1973. Played on an outground at Ilkeston. Derek Randall played for Notts, and I'm sure most of both sides were made up of local players, but the big draw was Gary Sobers. Also, Venkat played for Derbyshire. The world has changed a lot since then. We might not like it, but we can't stop it. heritage.derbyshireccc.com |

Indeed. See Middlesex back in the day. Hampshire. Somerset. Derbyshire. Lancashire. Essex. In the end Yorkshire.

SMJ Woods was an Australian. He played for Somerset in the 1890s. He's buried locally.

WG the ultimate pro/mercenary/cheat. Cricket has form, from a long way back.

The Essex team that won half a dozen county championships from 1979 onwards included such local boys as Ken McEwen (S. Africa), Brian Hardie (Scotland), Norbert Philip (W. Indies) and John Childs (Plymouth) IIRC. And probably plenty more who I've forgotten.

I've played at Downend (WG's alma mater) - it's a funny little ground, triangular in shape. I have an average of 103 there. (Qualification - 1 innings )

In the end, the role of the counties is to have a competition that is suitable for producing the players capable of performing for the English national team. As well as the competition and aiming to win the county championship. The situation is therefore different to football where the support of national teams is often very much a secondary objective of the club game. |

Neil Smith was from Yorkshire, IIRC.

Sorry, wrote that post when I was in the zone earlier, then walked away and obviously things have moved onwards.
