Oscar - I knowthat when bowling, or watching, but as a born No 11, I never quite managed to put it into practice when batting...

Samit Patel's dad, Ron, used to take a guard 6 inches outside leg, then step further to leg as the bowler let the ball go. Scored a surprising amount of runs.

I suppose it could mess a bowler's line up. I think I'd just bowl at off. I used to practice bowling on my own at just a set of stumps when things were going badly, it could make it worse, having a batsman standing there helps line up what you want to do.

Yep - I bowl a lot more accurately at a set of stumps with a batter than a naked set. Erm, of stumps, that is.

I used to find just bowling at a stump (or stumps) much more difficult than bowling at a batter.

I miss bowling, and even fielding. I do not miss batting even a little bit.

I sometimes convince myself I could still bowl well, must be 7 or 8 years since I have, I can only imagine how painful it would be the next day if I actually went and tried.

I enjoyed batting - which I was ok, but never great at, but could be effective occasionally (no 8 was about right for me)
I enjoyed bowling less - which I was better at (both seam up and offspin).
I quite enjoyed fielding in and around the ring, but not out on the boundary.

I used to pepper my brother with short balls in our makeshift wicket in the back garden. That was the benefit of being 7 years older than him.
He grew up to be bigger than me though and also the better cricketer and still plays today. I am sure my bowling shaped the player he is today

My moment of glory was chinning one of our best batsmen in the nets with a well-aimed bouncer. I got the odd 5-for too but none of those involved bodily injury. (No serious harm done but it made a mark.)
