Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

So, followers of county cricket, do we really not have a single fiery, fit, fast bowler to take to Australia?

Wood's fast enough but his fitness is a worry. I agree - it does look like a squad for a home Ashes series rather than the likes of the Gabba and the WACA...

McGrath had Brett Lee or Shane Warne at the other end, great medium pace is fine, ie Anderson, but you need some variation at the other end in Australia.

I'd discounted Wood, his fitness means he won't make a test

In international terms they're fast/medium. But neither was picked for pace, just the magic they do with the ball.

'Fast medium'

And originally they were both picked for pace.

This obsession some, particularly in the media, have with express out and out fast bowlers is unhealthy.

Pick your best bowlers - it's as simple as that.

If our bowlers aren't good enough, then that's just tough.

We don't have a mystery spinner either, but I hear far less about that.

In the end though, our batsmen simply aren't scoring enough runs to give the bowlers a chance. That's why we won't win in Australia. Not that our bowlers bowl at 86mph rather than 92mph.

Perhaps if the ecb prioritised 4 day cricket over a short pointless t20 competition, then our bowlers and batters would be better prepared.

Nope, huge difference, especially on flat Aussie wickets, you always need at least one consistent fast bowler to back up your medium pacers and spinners. As for spinners, doesn't have to be a mystery spinner, we just need to give a frontline spinner a decent run, rather than picking on batting ability. A big difference between an odd 86 mph ball and a fast bowler consistently hitting that pace with the odd 89moh ball/spell.

Agree entirely with the last point.
