Shouldn't be in, and should never have been in the England team. The South African contingent of the English team seems to be that we get all their rejects (Jade Dernbach) or problematic players (KP, Trott). International teams shouldn't be something you pick and choose because you're not good enough to get in your country of birth.

Couldn't agree more, I was born in Singapore as my father was in the RAF (and have served 24 years in the Army myself) but if I was ever good enough to play a sport at international level, I wouldn't feel right representing England.

I do feel a great affinity for Singapore and visit as many times as work, home and practicality will allow. A lovely country, 'we' in Britain could learn from. If you are ever fortunate to take a look see, ensure a vist to Sentosa Island - connected to the mainland by a Cable Car. It was the last gun emplacement to be taken by the Japanese and the scene of the original surrender by the British and then by the Japanese. A fully working gun emplacement is still there with live figures that fire every 10 minutes. The museum is also worth a visit as they have two rooms detailed with figures on both those occasions. Also has a wildlife sanctuary on the island. Singapore City itself is a hub-bub of life with many cultures, Islam, Buddhism, Shinto and Christianity all living together. I always look our for their results in World Cup qualfiiers, friendlies, and domestic leagues. Being a military man, love the symbiotic relationship between their population and their Armed Forces - 'we' could learn a lot from that too!

All very interesting. Not remotely what I asked, mind.
Just thought there was something odd about not feeling English enough to represent them at a sport, but yet somehow feeling British enough to be in the Armed Forces. I suppose there's a long history of mercenaries in the military though, to be fair.

I am British (Singaporean) on my Military JPA System. Throughout our long military history, actually more 'foreigners' have served Britain in conflict than home-grown 'Englishmen'!

So you would count the Welsh, Scottish and (N) Irish as foreigners?

My point was, more Non-English have fought for Britain than not. Spent a long time in the Gulf and there is no word for Brit or British in Arabic so got used to referring to all 'Brits' as English!

Do see the Irish as foreigners though, not the Northern Irish
