Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

My point Wrigglers was that despite dominating the middle three tests of that series (a lot thanks to our fast/swing bowlers) we were only 2-1 up and we were wobbling in the 5th test at the Oval. If KP had gone, we would have lost. If KP had scored slowly the Aussies may have had a chaseable target. We hadn't won the Ashes in a generation. The default England mode would have been to go into their shells. KP's mode (once he survived Warne's routine catch fcukup) was to repeatedly launch Brett Lee bouncers into the stands...

I think now it's clear that Pietersen was dispensed with for non-cricketing reasons despite what the ECB may say.

Obviously a culmination of things, the worst probably being the text messages to the South Africans will have served to undermine the team management. Clearly in my view they bided their time until they thought the time was right and jettisoned him on their terms rather than his when things weren't going that well. If I managed someone like that I'd have thought about getting rid, no matter how brilliant they were, sometimes they're not worth the trouble. It was just a matter of timing. I don't think Pietersen is a scapegoat, he laid the foundations for his own dismissal off the cricket square.
We will never be told the reasoning in public.

I think you're focussing on one game out of over 100.......

The aussies lost because they walked off for bad light at the end of day 2, and they dropped KP 3 times......

Going back to 2005 our first choice attack was varied - and had 5 members.

Swing and control from Hoggard, LH pace from Simon Jones, pace and aggression from Flintoff, Harmison offering height and bounce, containing and defensive spin from Giles.

Now it is very samey.

Who would be in your all-time (Home) County XI? (Overseas players allowed, maybe home and away teams!)

As a Gloucestershire lad, I would pick;
Overseas XI
Barry Richards,Zaheer Abbas,Allan Border,Mike Hussey,Jonty Rhodes,Mike Procter,Kevin Curran(wk),Muritiah Muralitharan,Craig McMillan,Courtney Walsh,Terry Alderman
Home XI
Chris Broad,Bill Athey,Wally Hammond,Tom Graveney,Gilbert Jessop,Mark Alleyne,Jack Russell(wk),WG Grace,John Childs,Dave Lawrence,Jon Lewis

Not sure about 1st class but guess the lads would do well in the limited overs!

Nice to see that despite everything, the England selectors still have a sense of humour, in retaining Comedy Dernbach for the WI trip and the World Cup...

Ref Dernbach

''he made his T20 and ODI debuts the following summer and established himself as an important part of the side''

I don't often disagree with Wisden, Cricinfo or Cricket Archive but really!!!!!!!!!

(and in my mixed Warwickshire team, I've got Amiss, Kallicharran, Trott, Bell, Maddy, Reeve (c), Humpage (wk), Pollock, PA Smith, Donald, Willis. Jeetan Patel would come in for Paul Smith if there was any danger of a spot of turn. Dermot Reeve earns his place by being an eccentric genius as captain, rather than his cricketing brilliance, but winning 3 out of 4 trophies in 1994 wasn't a bad job; had he won the toss vs the Pears in the Nat west final, it would have been a clean sweep.

Obviously I was joking about Darren Maddy; on careful consideration, one BC Lara just about scrapes in :)

Apparently the PM (for it is he) has come out in support of KP. And then proceeded to backtrack and said "I had better stay out of this one, it's for the England selectors to pick the England team". That's a relief then.
