Whether they can do more than one skill isn't that important and is a bonus, the issue is whether they can do the skill they're picked for as good as a specialist. No one would moan about Alec Stewart being picked as a specialist batsman for example.

The bowlers are fine and Stokes has earned the right to be picked as a specialist batsman in this series. Buttler and Bairstow aren't great ATM though and their stats overall aren't great either for specialist batsmen.

The thought of a few nets is really appealing. But then I remember when I last played, filling in when needed for a local 3rd XI: my eye had gone, I could see the ball move but just couldn't react in time, the ball was coming out so slowly it was embarrassing and fielding was reduced to letting the ball hit me more than picking it up cleanly! :-) And that was ten years ago, I think it would break me now!

Just found this card from one of my last few matches, batted at six and basically leant on my bat watching the guy at the other end blaze it all over the place, then bowled a tidy over at the end :-)

I've played a lot of club cricket in my time and I'd say that Purley number 7 was a ringer

I've found some averages for my old club - I'm in there for 2003, 2004 and 2005:

docs.google.com

Looks like I managed to do much better in the friendlies, although I consistently had the worst economy rate of all the bowlers.

367 does look a tall ask just to avoid the follow on, Greppers... you'll be pleased to hear there's rain in Taunton, although the forecast for the next two days shouldn't be enough to save the Yorkies barring a Gary Ballance special

The old “if you want to open the bowling, you have to bat at 7 or below” approach to club cricket. Everyone gets a go.

You have to feel for the opposition. They must have had their tails up at 5 down
