Yeah, makes sense to me, no point bringing in an untried player just to make them face the best bowling attack in the world when they haven't faced a red ball in weeks.
I'm not sure why Overton was in the team. If you're in as a seamer only you should be able to take the new ball. I was all for him bowling plenty of overs, otherwise pointless him being there. Get Woakes back in, far better option. Somebody throws small balls at his head in the nets if you're worried about his batting

Overton wasn't in the team to bowl with the new ball, so shouldn't be judged on whether he did or didn't. That said he wasn't great at the job he was supposed to do (solid, dependable, and economical).
I agree no point changing the side.

This gallery of test cricketing ineptitude was ‘tried’ during the 1989 Ashes.
Might as well let this lot suffer. Then start a long term plan to regain some red ball competence.

I take it back actually, Overton was ok on economy, just not very threatening but I that wasn't expected tbh. I think that says he did his job and he bowled quite a bit in the first innings.
I think this just shows why Australia's attack was better than England's and why Anderson was a big miss.

Our match really is at Edgbaston. I'm sure the original fixture list said it was at Chelmsford.

Interesting piece by Vic Marks todsy, basically saying give somebody else the captaincy and let Root concentrate on his batting. Which I've been saying all along, provided there is an alternative.
The unfortunate reality is that there doesn't appear to be one. You can't give it to Stokes, I genuinely think he isn't suited, let him carry on being an all rounder and carry on improving.
But who then? I honestly think we've got to stick with Root. You never know, the trauma of this series could even be the making of him as captain? A month off to go and reflect on where he could improve and recharge his batteries?
