He was running to intercept a ball which was heading more or less straight for someone else - Ravi Bopara IIRC so he slid to a halt on his knees/side and left the ball, making no attempt to pretend he’d stopped it. The Sky commentators reckoned he was lucky to ‘get away with it’.
