Larkim, it's a bit more complicated than that, in that each ball is not a single stand-alone event but part of a greater plan. Speaking for myself, short-pitched bowling was not usually aimed at taking a wicket with that specific ball (though it sometimes did) but improving my chances with the next one that was pitched up.

Naive. Didn't have the skill to bowl him out so resorted to the tactics of a bully.

Taking away short pitch bowling as part of a fast bowlers armoury would be wrong. It's not bullying, it's a legitimate tactic to bowl out the batsman. We're talking about top class cricketers here who should have the skill to withstand such bowling. Yesterday's incident with Smith was unfortunate but is part of the game.
It should be flagged up that Smith was wearing an illegal helmet as it didn't have the back flaps which protect the base of the skull and neck.

It's not mandatory from what I've read so isn't illegal.

Not illegal postie. Listening to Sangakara yesterday, they are in the process of testing them, need CE approval as well. Once all that happens then it will go before the ICC Council and could well become mandatory at international level.
As for FR, have you ever watched test match cricket? I can remember the days when the Windies use to bowl six bouncers on the trot before the rules change. Some of my fondest memories of cricket are seeing batsmen taking on ultra fast bowling.
Ask Brett Lee, Jeff Thompson or Lillee if they think it is bullying tactics.

LOL at bullying. Make them bowl underarm, speed limit them to 50mph.

My mistake, I thought I read otherwise. Smith's blow yesterday will certainly tip the balance in favour of a more protective helmet though.
About time for England to up the scoring rate if they want to entertain any chance of winning this match. When was the last drawn test in England btw? It's been a while.

Good session for England. I notice Stokes also doesn't have the neck guards on his helmet.
Draw still favourite unless Stokes and Buttler go Ballistic after lunch.

What do we think, take the long handle out after lunch for an hour and set them 250 in 50 to 55 overs? That's what I'd like to see happen.
