Having seen the video, it looks very much like somebody was giving him (them) grief, and tried the first punch, which made Stokes angry.
They then realised they'd poked the bear and wanted to back off, but he followed through, despite probably having the opportunity to walk away.
Shouldn't be in that situation in the first place though.
He'll have to behave in Oz if he's allowed out at night, they won't be so forgiving / wet.
