Goggins got a mention in one of the youtube clips I saw talking about this. I think the consensus was that he would struggle with the pace but maybe.

My (possibly jaundiced) view of NFL players is that it's all about sprint speed and power and they don't worry what state they're in after 20 seconds because the play will be over by then.

Alex Viada ("The Hybrid Athlete") claims a sub-4:30 mile and a 700lb squat and deadlift. Seems plausible. A sub-2:30 marathon and a 700lb squat and deadlift would be more of an eyebrow raiser.

Oops, failed to notice that this was page two and Captain Mark Reynolds had already introduced Mr Viada to the thread.

Agree with V-rap. Still think Ashton Eaton (US tippety top decathlete) could do it. He ran a 4:14.48 1500 so a sub five min mile is easily within his capabilities. Expect he could squat 700lb, or close.

The thing isn’t about having pbs in each area. It’s doing them on the same day. You’ve got to train for both at the same time. Alex Viada might be able to get there but hasn’t yet.

Sharpie, a CrossFit YouTube’s called Armen Hammer is a mate of Trey Hardee who got a silver behind Eaton at this he London games. Hardee reckons he could have done it when he was competing but I guess we’ll never know, and if he could I’d bet Eaton could.

I'm sorry Nellers - I missed the last line in your opening post where you mention decathletes as a possible. I bet Kevin Mayer, the current world champ (French) could also do both - on the same day. I read somewhere he had to do a lot of strength work.

But ultimately I'm a bit 'why?' For me a decathlon is as wide ranging an athletic competition as I'd ever want to see. And - since Ashton Eaton - it's become a lot easier to watch. The decathletes mainly seemed like big slow lumps (to me!) before him.

Suppose Daley was alright.

Armen Hammer is a stage name. His name is Armen but I couldn’t tell you his surname.
