Like Gus's one about switching off the electric oven at the wall and opening the door to stop the stupid fan running after oven is no longer being used.

Thanks Old Mum re logs. I've got a whole tree at my mum's and about a dozen on our place, all of which need cutting up. It's not the wood, it's the sawing! :-) G

Walking the overdraft tightrope :(
My cost of living has nearly doubled since January... Just got a message I am knocking at my overdraft limit and I still have 10 days to go before I can invoice...

I work (part time) from home so I spend quite a lot of time in the house. And being a bit of a slob, while here I wear old race T shirts and shorts in summer, moving on to tracksters and a fleece on top in winter. These are all technical fabrics so they go through the washing machine in an hour at 30 or 40 degrees instead of the full cottons cycle, they come out nearly dry so don't need to go through the tumbler, and they don't need ironing.

And having pv panels, I wait until the sun's out till I put the laundry on.

The smart meter shows me how much I've used today and I can check how much I've exported. But it doesn't tell me how much I've saved by using my own generated power for running appliances. So it's not so smart really.

I see that the powers that be are working on a plan to encourage off peak usage with financial incentives..... If you have a smart meter!
Which is great but what if you don't want it can't have one!

Octopus (who I'm with) were trialing exactly that a short while back. If you cut your usage by x% between 4 and 7 in the evening, you'd get the power you did use for free or get some kind of payback.

Another scheme they had, when it had been windy and sunny so there was a surplus of electricity, was to actually pay consumers to use it overnight. Great for charging up the car or storage battery.

Neither of these were worth it for me but it shows that there is at least some original thinking going on.

When we get our solar panels fitted, I think we swap to Octopus Agile (from Octopus Go that we currently use). That's the one that allows us to choose to take from or give to the grid on a half hourly basis, based on really time price of electricity vs. our demand / supply capacity. Will be fascinating! :-) G

I saw that plan, if it comes to fruition I'll be buying at least one socket timer. The washer has a timer but the tumbler does not. The bread maker does though :-)

I've seen that scheme but have no idea how to calculate if it's worth my while.

I cannot have a smart meter, even if I wanted one: no signal!

The cost of buying milk - as a single person household I'm unlikely to use 4 pints before it goes bad which is 30p more than the 2 pint bottle! [tbh I don't know whether this has always been the case or if I've just noticed it now]

About This Thread

Maintained by EvilPixie
With the news (again) being filled with doom and gloom about prices I thought a thread on the topic might be good.

I have seen a few threads about air fryers etc that include comments on cost - yes they are cheaper to run but cost a lot to buy!

But what about the smaller habits.

Bread .... given the cost of fuel is making it cheaper than buying as you have to use the oven? I don't have a smart meter so don't know the cost of heating my oven apart from knowing it will cost elec...
