Cheating Marathon Man...?

So why is he now un-admitting it (possibly "denying" is the word I'm groping for here) when it is blindingly obvious to the most casual observer that he did in fact cheat? I think everyone would respect him more if he just said "Yes, I did a really stupid thing, I'm very very sorry".
