I insure the car fully, full breakdown, legal etc no excess because I can afford the few quid a month extra, but could not afford the excess! Or expense of being stranded somewhere.

The specialist vets do interest free loans as it turns out, so did that instead of dipping into savings. That was about the only expense apart from routine stuff in 14 years so even then I don't think insurance is often worth it.
