Patti had a scratching post, which we never ever saw her use, it was just an ornament.
Last month I chucked it, and now she keeps going to the corner and mewling... like I've thrown something precious out!

Ours have a scratching post with a platform on it. One of them explores it several times a day in hope of finding Dreamies (which we put up there occasionally). Our previous cats have resolutely ignored it.
