And when I do my early training should I ignore him until finished? At present he's living in the conservatory so had plenty of space litter box water etc Also read somewhere that water bowl should be well away from food bowl even another room. Sounds daft to me?

EP - we have water in various places but Pepper's favourite place to drink is the bird bath! So try different places in the conservatory -even different bowls. The wider the better as they are less stimulating on the cat's whiskers.
