They literally come home to use a litter tray now. This is since moving home, so maybe they got used to using them while we kept them in for a few weeks. I also wondered if it's because this is not yet their territory?

If it's different from where they were before they might have decided they prefer litter. I've had cats who come in to use a litter tray instead of going outside. Including my neighbour's squatting cat (who has now been collected by his owner).
