I've been watching the live stream broadcast in chunks and have now seen myself limping across the line. Not my best running on film by some margin.

One thing that I have noticed is the number of young children crossing the line with parents. This was being done previously and this year's pre-race instructions was telling people not to do it. Children could get lost, impede other runners, etc. I think I am well into double figures with the numbers I have spotted and the race commentators (all Event Team personnel) seem to enjoy it and even interview those responsible. A bit confusing when Grounded Events give specific instructions yet their staff do the opposite!

Personally, I don't mind it at smaller events but not at big city marathons. Moan over until the next time.

I'm bringing this up having just heard Tom Naylor on Jenni Falconer's Run Pod podcast. He was explaining what went wrong with regards to the additional 568m near Rottingdean.

First, he said that some of the event team had left since the 2019 race. Usually, there are about five people looking at sections of the course to make sure it is correct. At the eastern end of the course, those team members were not familiar with that section and were generally looking at each other for confirmation for which no-one was able to identify the error.

The other aspect related to the BM Ride. There should have been two u-turns. One for the BM Ride and the other for the marathon. Normally, the cyclists will pass that section and the team were to move the u-turn back down the hill for the runners. As the BM Ride was cancelled about eight weeks before, the event team came out and assumed that it had been set up for the marathon and did not spot the error.

Looking good for the marathon on Sunday - I hope you're all tapered and eager!

A reminder that there will be a Fetchpoint at around mile 19.

Location in what.three.words is

lonely.leans.fuel

Or in map terms, outside the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove. There will be red & yellow bunting.

I will probably just be shouting encouragement as I'm not sure people will want to take sweets from strangers these days. If there's anything you'd particularly like at that point let me know & I'll do my best.
