Incidentally Second Place is exactly the type of book I think McG would hate.
In fact when Deborah Levy was asked in 2019 the last great books she'd read:
"The trilogy of novels by Rachel Cusk: “Outline,” “Transit” and “Kudos.” Conceptually magnificent, these books offer literature something new in thought, expression and structure."
Need I say more?

A recommendation from Deborah Levy? Please bring me my bargepole. No, the 20 footer. The 10 footer will be insufficient for this purpose.

Certain i have quite enjoyed a Rachel Cusk - saving agnes. One of the odd perks of working for macmillan, many moons ago, was we got to choose a free book for xmas from a list of about 20. That was one of the better ones i think

I finished Rory Stewart's Politics On The Edge yesterday. I found it interesting on how internal party and parliamentary politics work, but maddening how screwed up the whole system is. I liked Stewart, and have no doubt that he is more honest and honourable than most politicians, but his ego and lack of self-awareness was part of his undoing, as was his refusal to play the game. He did rather bang on about his own achievements a lot.
Needing another Audible book before my next credit arrives I found Audrey Niffeneger's The Time Traveller's Wife was available for free, so that's next up. Meanwhile I am halfway through the paperback of Slough House, by Mick Herron, the sixth in the Slow Horses series. Only Bad Actors left after that, and that's sitting waiting on the TBR pile.

Library notified me that The High House was in, so I went to collect it. Having a little time to spare, I wandered round the shelves and found a Muriel Spark I haven't read, so I got that too.

Up to page 130 in THH, it's got a haunting, melancholic, dis-attached atmosphere that resonates with me. The fictional sleepwalk into tragedy, that is seemingly mirrored by the real world's own.
