Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

No, it wasn't me. I just checked back and it was Yorkshire Pie who suggested it with The Handmaid's Tale as the bonus book that (cheery) month.

I first read it at university but it made more of an impression on me reading it again that time.

Owen Meany is a great book but I dunno, maybe just a bit too dark. And the way Irving represented Owen's voice in capital letters grated on me. It was his biggest selling book apparently, you'd thought that TWATG would have that one wouldn't you?

I discovered Irving late, my brother gave me a copy of The Cider House Rules and that was it. That's pretty dark too of course .... I did get the DVD of the movie, but haven't dared to watch it.

That made me laugh, NE. THNT is pretty dark, too :) suicide, incest, accidental death, bankruptcy, etc.

Well, that's true. I suppose on a sliding scale of what creeped me out the most, Owen Meany swung it :-)

I do remember seeing the movie but it was years ago and before I read the book. Jodie Foster wasn't it?

The only Irving I’ve tried to read was Owen Meany, and I hated it.
