The reason I raised the completion issue though Synge is because only last weekend there was another attempt on a major challenge that I was involved in and before it the contender (who is not someone to lie down easily) made all most word for word similar statements (and is not the first simply why any of us do any of this stuff anyway?) but when given a real battering by the weather and slipping further and further behind his schedule he (sensibly) stopped, in the same way that John did at Barkley this year.

The other issue with slipping off a pre-defined schedule by a large amount is that all the support is geared to that schedule, once you get too far from it people start to have other commitments and the whole thing starts to unravel very quickly. Though as Vrap rightly says he at least does have the target of being the first to keep him motivated. I will be interested to see the outcome.

Runcorn and Widnes in the early afternoon rush hour - I wonder how prepared for the less glamorous side of this he is? Buses, pedestrians, bits of painted-on cycle lane ...

Can't imagine it gets that busy on the old bridge (cyclists, pedestrians & buses only) between Runcorn & Widnes any more?

It is half-term in MCR at least, so likely to be.

4.20pm BG is well gone. I think starting BG at 8pm is looking very unlikely.

I reckon he'll complete BG in under 24hr once he arrives but so far behind the ambitious schedule he'll leave CR for another trip.

Yes, I hadn't really appreciated the issue over support on such a multi-day event. It's a lot different from asking race marshals to stay out for an extra half hour, it may be asking the support team to turn out on a completely different schedule, such as night instead of day.

The one thing the current delay is doing that is positive is that it is going to put his BG on a more normal schedule (i.e. late evening start). The original schedule had him on Leg 3 in the dark over the most difficult section which wasn't really optimum, so that may help him claw back some time.

I put the tent up at Burns at ~3 in a 10 minute break in the weather- it’s really not nice! Feeding daughter in Carlisle atm, can’t say I’ll keep an eye on the hills on the way back as doubt I’ll be able to see them
