just been playing with the new OS Maps 3D arial maps - really quite good for this sort of thing - you can really see the difference between the 2 descents.

For those of us who can't get to the Lakes easily I think it'll be a really good way of 'recce'ing' and looking at the different lines. The detail and 3D rendering is rather impressive.

No, apparently you have to be a subscriber to get the 3D aerial mapping. There is a 7 day trial, and I may have a 20% discount code.

There are three regularly used descents: the 'classic' Hall's Fell, the 'gentle, runnable but a km longer' Doddick, plus the Parachute, which is more runnable and safer than you could possibly imagine. It's also the most direct. I'm a Doddick for fun, Parachute for time man ;)

7 day trial started :) that's fabulous, thank you Flanker.

I had a similar Q to Gromit and that view has answered it for me - Doddick is best route with dog and 14 yr old :)

The tourist path on the valley side and then the low level path to Threlkeld might be the best route with a teen and a dog ;)

Depending which way you're going there are good paths off either "end" of Blencathra. The Eastern end as great views. Blencathra is one of my very favourite mountains. If anyone ever asks about the BG I say drive over the A66 toward Keswick. Look up the hulking bouncer of a hill and think about a 30 minute decent followed by crossing the valley and going up Clough Head (quite possibly in the dark). Bloody fantastic it is too! starstarstarstarstar

Doddick is awesome. I came down on my own one afternoon and it's a really special place for a very average plodder like me. Safe but exhilarating
