Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I am no great expert on programming but suspect it is hideously difficult on a website with 53,000 users to give all of them the ability to block any one or more of the others within a thread but allow the other contributions through.

If doing this means poor old Lord Fetch missing the first three years of his marriage and the site slowing down massively, I'd say it's a price not worth paying. Best to ignore the ones you find boring/unfunny/generally rubbish and, if you find a posting personally offensive, send the poster an Fmail saying you don't like it and would they stop doing it. that means if someone offends lots of people they get about 300 fmails: that might make them appreciate the impact of their comments.

I've never quite understood how blocking works. Obviously it means you can't see the blockee's posts, but presumably you can see all the responses to them, so I suspect curiosity would get the better of me as to what they actually wrote :) Also, what about threads started by the blockee? Does the whole thread disappear?

Don't know about a new thread sheri but you are right about the contributions to threads. If curiosity gets the better of you fine but at least you have a choice

There's some standard forum software where you'll see the poster's name & avatar & so on, but instead of the post content, just some text saying This user is on your ignore list. I doubt it would be incredibly complicated to add something like this, but it would be something of a hit on site performance.
