Can you recommend me a bag for doing the OMM please? How big? I have potentially committed to doing the OMM this year, so need to get myself a rucksack. I had the 'original' KIMM sac about 10 years and it looks like you can still get something similar from OMM. But have things moved on? It will double up for some run-commuting, so I don't want to go too big if possible. My partner has a fancy tent. I don't have an appropriate sleeping bag yet. |

You'll need something around ~20-25l minimum, depending on how big your tent, sleeping bag and kit roll up. Then it's apersonal preference on it you go for the lightest weight possible (any of the omm/Montane etc running specific ones that work for you) or something that gives a bit of support but weighs more. For those you're looking at walking/trekking day packs or similar. I go with the latter when I've done MMs and favour osprey bags. In particular the talon 22 or 33l. That's my go to bag of choice anyway. But you may prefer other brands. |

One of the UD Fastpack series? Or one of the (smaller) lovely Cumbrian made Atom packs?

The OMM bags have been around a long time. The bigger sizes are generally well made and well designed. My wife and I enjoy doing long walks while carrying kit (we've done the Dales High Way, Norfolk Coast Path and Jorvik Way in the last year or so) and I use her OMM rucksack

I haven't done the OMM but did have a a bag about 25 years ago for commuting and although light, did chafe a bit. In the winter, I often run with a Montane trailblazer 25L pack and weight in the range of 4-5KG. Carrying layers for standing around, tea, cameras etc. It's been good for distances up to 24KM and paces up to around 4:00/KM I've carried a laptop in it for commuting but had to wrap it in a fleece for most comfort and keep it slightly off the back. The 30L is displayed on the video below |

I've got an Osprey 25L (I think) has been great for commuting and support runs for ultras, but I haven't done an ultra with it and have never done an OMM or any other multi day. So I'm not really helping am I?! Best of luck! G

A couple of final thoughts; My wife has a Montane Gecko VP 20+ which might do the job. It holds half of the kit for a fairly lightweight overnight camping expedition. It fits like a running vest, so you can run in it. Good alternative to the UD fastpack vests. The Montane Trailblazer 25 is a bit bigger and more of a conventional pack than a vest. Good luck. |

Another Osprey fan here! I got my 33 litre one especially for the OMM and have since accumulated other, smaller and more specific ones. The hydration bladder compartment is the same in all, so I rotate my 2 litre bladder around the rucksacks. I find they are a great fit, don't move/chafe but are a little heavier. It makes them well sturdy. Mine has been around the world multiple times over with me! Large enough to pack everything for a 2 week MTB safari, small enough to carry on the plane! Especially good if multiple changes are scheduled! The 22 litre one I have is actually plenty big enough for long weekends etc and also makes an excellent larger day pack. I have a hydration pack with some storage and a hydration pack with more storage too... I would say the 22 litre would be big enough for the OMM now I have more experience, as you can tie your tent etc onto the outside securely, making the whole thing less bulky and easier to manage in inclement weather. |
