I know up here this are sex educational materials available for schools to use with youngsters who are operating at a different level to their peers. Our school nurses and learning disabilities nurses share them with mainstream schools all the time. I would imagine that specialist provisions will be well used to tackling this in an appropriate way. If you speak to the school they can hopefully share materials so you can reinforce the same message at home.

Otherwise my take on sex ed has always been to answer any questions as honestly as you can, at a level appropriate for their understanding. Reinforcing appropriate boundaries as/when required.

QP is still resolutely not interested in girls and he's 13. He is definitely changing physically though so it's only a matter of time.

T has been growing up for a while, hates it, hates talking about it. No interest in girls or boys at all

My friend's son asked endless very specific questions (which she answered in precise terms and graphic detail).

Sorry good point TM. QP has not expressed a preference, in that way, for either gender. He isn't really interested in people more generally though.

I've always been pretty matter of fact with QP and had 'the chat' for the first time at about age 5. I talk openly about these sorts of things if they come up. That said QP is high functioning which probably makes it easier.

Just had a long chat with T about what the assessment was about, what would be the effect of diagnosis or not and what ASD means. Quite emotional really.

We have a diagnosis, he scored 11 and the 'over this mark is ASD' is 7.

How do you feel about that C?

We finally have a SALT appointment after 6 months waiting. Hopefully we'll have an answer soon. It won't make a huge difference for us but might help school and open doors later.

Thats good news HP.

I think i mostly feel relieved - we have an answer, its not my bad parenting or me trying to make him something he isn't. It gives us a framework for moving forward.

That's good.

I keep wondering how differently I might have done things if I had realised sooner. My mum's old school advice around parenting certainly hasn't helped.
