In response to last few posts.
My AF usually results in only about 90-120 bpm (but that of course means the upper chamber can be doing 300-400 bpm (which you do not feel). Last time I was in A&E it was 90 and the doc (middle of the night) though I was "having a laugh" as to him 90 wasn't that high.
Interesting on the Garmin too- I have noticed in the last 2 runs (I don't use it every time) that for the first few minutes the rate is very high, then falls abruptly to whatever (140-150) for the rest fo the run. I don;t believe it actually, but mst check that out properly. I think I;d know if it was going 180+
Since A&E (Nov) I now have pill-in-pocket (Fleicanide). I have had to use it twice since then - and as I have said before things calmed down in a few hours (maybe it would anyway). Things for me at least seem manageable at the moment.
have my first half marathon Sunday since the last in May when my AF was diagnosed.

That's what I was checking with macca. I'm not familiar with AF so didn't realise the ventricular heartbeat would still be at a relatively low level.
If you have poor contact between skin and the Garmin strap, you will get false high readings. Typically this is seen when you first set off then once you begin to sweat a little, contact is made and true readings are produced. To avoid this you need to thoroughly wet the ridged areas with saliva and put it on only just before setting out. Make sure it's adjusted tightly too.
Good luck for your half DBG

ah-ha - yes I remember now (must be the senility creeping in) - I cut off the first bit of my garmin trace yesterday - just so the first mile wouldn't show as me taking 50 minutes!
I'll get a screen snap of it or enter it without cutting the bits off.
I take flecainide (50mg twice a day) and a beta blocker (bisopralol, 5mg/day) which goes some way to expalining the low heart rates. I'm down for ablation soon (hopefully April) - but have to get an INR value of 2.5 for at least four weeks before they operate.

Macca53 - if you remember and don't mind, please could you tell me/us how it goes. I'm keen to learn more as one day it might come to the operation for me.....and of course good luck and hope it goes well.
As to Garmin contact theory - that sounds sensible. I'm going to do some maual checks early into my next run.

Hi Ive had a second cardioversion and am now back in sinus rhythymn. Im staying on 2.5 mg bisoprolol this time and have been given the ok to exercise. Im building the effort level back up slowly at the moment working at around 125 - 135 bpm. In a few weeks time I have a feeling I will come up against a max heartrate of a little over 150, it being depressed by the bb's. Hopefully that will equate to sub 8 min miles. Provided I dont go back into AF it looks as though I will still be able to run long events.

If you read my blog you'll know that I ran the Wrexham Half today - my first since AF attack in May (Chester Half). Hopeful for a very fast race, I set a PB for 10 miles (67:01), but shortly after AF set in. The 205bpm was a bit scary and of course I had to stop/slow. Ultimately limped home in about 1:34 - very frustrated. Heart settled down after about 4 hours. I am sure it would have been a PB but for that.
Hope you AFers are all coping.

Hi DBG are you taking beta blockers or just keeping flecinide with you if you go into AF Im back to running and concentrating on running at lower heartrates to get the best out of the avialble heartrate range. Highest heartrate seen to date has been 149 although I was nowhere near my max effort.

Hi All - been summoned for my PV Ablation (April 22).
Sorry to hear about your probs DBG - luckily I've never had an episode during a race, a few during training sessions though and it can be a bit scary although more often than not it's just a pain in the backside having to limp home.

Exflyboy, I'm not on BBs just Fleicanide - so paroxysmal AF at the moment. I tried to run a t130-140 bpm this morning for my 12 miler -just too keep things under control.
Macca53, good to hear you have a date. As I say, let me know how it goes if you don't mind. Are you permanent or persistant AF?

paroxsysmal - but HR slowed down so much by meds (RHR now about 38) that at my last "event" a couple of months ago the cardiologist said that there really wasn't anything else he could do with meds so it was this or nothing.......
