The website says record your time for the leg. That's elapsed time I reckon.

Conversely, the same John Kynaston in the FAQs on the website

westhighlandwayrace.org

Responds to a direct, example based, question:

"If I ran 18 miles on day 1, starting at 8am and finishing at 11am, then 18 miles the following day, same start and finish time, is my leg 1 total time:
– 6 hours (time running, 2 x 3 hrs)
– 27 hours (time from starting leg 1 at 8am day 1 to finishing leg 1 at 11am day 2)
– 35 hours (time from start of race at midnight day 1 to finishing leg 1 at 11am day 2)"

With:

"All we are after is the time it took you to run 36 miles for leg 1.

How you do it is up to you. You could run 1 mile 36 times over the 4 days if you like.

So we are looking for the time it took you to run 36 miles so in your example 6hrs"

So - very clearly - moving time. Or, at least, time spent completing the individual activities that make up the total - he's not expecting us to include the 20+ hours per day between individual activities.

I've never used strava so I don't know, but is it possible their use of 'elapsed time' differs from how we're (or I'm) interpreting it?

Elapsed time for one activity is from when you press start for the first time until you press stop for the last time. Moving time is when strava thinks you're actually running/walking. So, if you stop for a few minutes, whether you press stop or not, it counts towards your elapsed time, but not to your moving time (even if you are moving, strava has no data to deduce that).

So the FAQ plus the other comment says the sum of the elapsed time for individual activities. Think this is trying to avoid people running hard for 10 minutes, taking a break for 10 minutes, like some of the dodgy 5k times people have been touting lately.

It's the time you take to run the distance, so you shouldn't stop your Garmin during the run. For example when I'm on a run, if I meet someone and stop to chat for 10 minutes I'll stop my Garmin then restart it. My moving time for that run will be 10 minutes quicker than the elapsed time. So for the purposes of this race I wouldn't stop my Garmin, if I chat to someone for 10 minutes I would include it in my time to do the leg. Obviously you can't include time in between runs because then everyone will take 9ish days!

I'm glad I'm not bothered about how long it takes me. I've never bothered much with strava I am on it, but mainly to see a running friend's photos because he's not on social media 😀.

So, don't pause your garmin during the actual times you are running (or in activity mode).

Think I've got it now - thanks - can you tell the buttons on my watch only ever get pressed twice (start and stop) when I go for a run? :)

That's it JRitchie. No stopping to chat! Which is why I'm lining up a different friend to chat to on every run.

I used to be like that CumbriAndy, I'm not sure why I changed to be honest because I'm not speedy at all and haven't cared about my times for years.

Given that there is a relay where you can split up the 95 miles between any of you over the 9.5 days any way you like, I think it's really pretty relaxed about what time and distance you actually log!

Personally, our team of 3 will be logging some miles between the 3 of us of 30 odd miles over 3 days for each of the 3 legs, but that's about all I know! :-) G

Yes it's very relaxed HappyG. Folk in my club are in a relay team and they've decided to each run 3 miles a day for the whole 9.5 days to cover it rather than one of them doing the first 30 odd then the next one doing 30 odd etc.

About This Thread

Maintained by
Following the cancellation of the 2020 Altra West Highland Way Race, we have decided to organise a virtual West Highland Way Race instead. The virtual events start at midnight on Thursday 11 June and allows people to run or walk 95 miles over 9.5 days, either individually, as a semi competitive 3 person relay team, or as a multi person fun relay team.

All entrants need to follow government guidelines for the period of the virtual race. Like all virtual events it relies on honesty from everyone, just getting out there, logging some miles as accurately as possible, and having some fun too.

Unlike the traditional event we are actively discouraging anyone from covering the 95 miles in one go. Instead you can run segments of your choosing, reaching the 3 checkpoint cutoffs, and then uploading your details to an online platform run by SI Entries.

Checkpoints are at:

Inversnaid - Leg 1: 36 miles to be completed by midnight on Monday 15 June;

Victoria Bridge, by Loch Tulla - Leg 2: a further 27 miles to be completed by midnight on Thursday 18 June;

Fort William - Leg 3: a further 32 miles giving a total of 95 miles to be completed by midday on Sunday 21 June.

Each runner or team needs to decide on a strategy according to their own ambitions and available time. Run and enjoy long single stages or break it down in to smaller (and possibly faster) stages - your imagination is your only guide.

On the evening of Saturday 20 June from 7pm to 8.30pm there will also be a show hosted by John Kynaston and Ian Beattie on the race Facebook page. They will chat with previous race winners and characters from earlier West Highland Way Races, along with a quiz.

More details, including a link to the entry page on SI Entries, can be found on the race website westhighlandwayrace.org
