Any suggestion that vit D deficiency could cause the problem, Som?

Vit D deficiency seems to be high on the agenda lately, nearly everyone I know who has been to the doctor about something or other has been diagnosed with it. Is it really that bad? Is it because it's winter, and we are staying indoors more (although I would think us runners get out a lot more than some people), or is it just something that's being looked for that might not have been in the past? I'm curious.

According to the guy on marathon talk last week you can only get vit D via being outside during the summer months.

I thought it was exposure to sunlight, regardless of the season.
Otherwise wouldn't we all have been suffering with it forever?
