I think the "if they put their minds to it" bit cuts that number down. There might be a lot who physically could do the training and adapt to it. There are not many who can mentally cope with doing stuff that hard, that exhausting, that repetitive, over and over and over for 4 years. But yes, given the range of sports available there's probably more than I'm thinking who have that potential. It's still not even close to 27% though. |

Hmmmm, so I'm definitely not too old at 57 then. The mind boggles as to how far removed from reality and ill educated some people are when it comes things like this. The vast majority of Olympians (excluding the break dancing Muppet from Australia) have put their lives, their hearts and their souls into their chosen sport. I wonder how many of that 27% were out looting Gregs last week? |

Of course, the outlier in all of this perhaps is our own @Marigold Practically the only example of the "Tricia watching" individual who made it right up to an elite level of sporting performance. |

It's just telling us what proportion of people give jokey answers to YouGov polls isn't it?

And for every Steve Way, there's an Alex Vero who get close but fail.

Even as an outlier, Marigold didn't make it to the Olympics though.

Alex Vero was nowhere near based on his results though there are suggestions he was fitter than he showed before he got injured. In fact the contrast is quite clear - it would have been obvious to Way from early on that he had a significant aptitude for running, whereas Vero was a more average guy who tried very hard but never got very far. I think most people would quite quickly find out whether they had any real potential if they had a go.

Alex Vero jumped to my mind when I saw this thread. Someone who would have been considered a decent runner on here though there was no evidence that he had elite potential, and who decided to have a go at putting in the work with the specific intention of trying to qualify for the Olympic marathon.
