Lovely pics, well done people!

And so, another 2018 month has flown by, and the stout-hearted members of the 1500 thread continue to run and run and run. My previous round-ups have referred to my non-running pursuits, but not everyone likes crafty things, so time for a change. Inspired by my Welsh OH and a recent visit to his homeland, the Welsh flag brought mythical creatures to mind.

Let’s start with DRAGONS then - a surprisingly global phenomenon, thought by some to have arisen out of our instinctive fear of snakes. Just about every culture across the world seems to have some form of dragon myth and giant serpents crop up in Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese, Egyptian, Hebrew, Greek, Norse and other mythologies, in many cases gaining a range of further attributes such as legs, wings, wisdom and fire-breathing abilities along the way. Always powerful, earning respect and awe, well done to our mighty August dragons (1st figure is annual, 2nd figure monthly mileage) :

Dropping to the other end of the alphabet, we find the UNICORN. This is thought to have its origins in animals such as rhinos, or various antelopes with horns close together, or always depicted sideways on, so only showing one apparent horn, the other hidden behind. The Danish royal throne is made partly of ‘unicorn horns’ though these are actually tusks, adapted canine teeth, from narwhals, a type of whale. (Unicorn horn sounds a lot more royal, though, doesn’t it?) The unicorn is another mythical beast appearing in many early cultures, as a white horse or sometimes a goat with a single horn, endowed with extraordinary speed, occasionally shown with wings too. A wild woodland creature that could only be tamed by a maiden, it became a symbol of purity and grace in Western Christian traditions. Well done to the 1500 group’s graceful and speedy unicorns:

Keeping to a horsey theme, let’s have a look at CENTAURS. A half-human/half-horse hybrid, this is yet another creature that can be found in many cultures, but we probably know them best from the Ancient Greeks. As a myth, they are thought to originate in non-horse riding people seeing horse-riders for the first time and assuming that human and beast must be one creature (apparently the horseless Aztecs thought the same thing about the Spanish conquistadors). Strong, speedy and with a reputation for enjoying a good party, well done to our centaurs:

Up into the air next, to learn a little about the PHOENIX, a bird with unusual abilities and a name that’s difficult to spell – I know this because my running club has Phoenix in its title. And guess what, this is another creature found all over the world in various forms in Egyptian, Greek, Hindu, Russian, Tibetan, Chinese and Japanese cultures. A symbol of the sun, and of renewal and regeneration, this is a bird which lives for a long time, then burns itself out, allowing a new phoenix to arise from the ashes of the old one. Well done to all our phoenixes, live long and keep flying high:

(Hope I've not missed anybody out!)
Well done, 1500ers – hope September brings us all lots of injury-free running fun!
