Oh dear D2, be brave, it will be worth it in the long run. We no longer crate Holly (mainly as the think took up too much space) but she settles nicely in the kitchen every night.

HP, adorable photos. Don't let the cuteness get to you, they will pull every trick in the book to get their way. :)

Holly is having her first season at just under 10 months. We are in week 1 and so far, it's not too bad. However, in my in laws are coming to stay with their intact male Labrador on Thursday. That is not going to work and I have no plan B!

I'm sure I posted this morning but I must have forgotten to hit submit.

It sounds far too much like having a new born baby D2. Hopefully there were no 2-3 hourly nightly feeds ;)

Do people shut the crate at night or leave door open so they have a safe den??

When Holly was very small we shut the crate at night. It was covered with a blanket so was nice and cosy. We did that until she was 5 months and we were due to go on hols and wouldn't be able to use the crate. In the day when we had to leave her or she needed quiet time, we had a pen which attached to the crate (door open) so she had more room. However, we had to remove the pen after a terrifying day where in our haste to get out one day, I'd forgotten to take her collar off and she got stuck on one of the pegs. Thankfully it bent enough for her to get her feet to the ground. She's been in the kitchen and utility since. Not brave enough to let her have run of downstairs as she's still very chewy at 10 months!

It is very much like having a newborn but with sharp pointy teeth! They then rapidly progress to bolshy teens.

However, I'm off work sick at the moment and Holly is stuck to my side. Every time I cough she's all agitated and wants to come and lick me, I guess to comfort me. But as she's very keen to keep herself clean during her season, I really really don't want licks right now!

Does he quiet down or whine until you get up? Are there puddles in the morning?

(I'm just trying to get a sense of what to expect. Ernie is apparently very good and very few puddles but I guess leaving mum might set things back)

He cries and howls and whines till I get up, which was about 6.45 this morning... sorry that's probably not what you wanted to hear! They are all different of course and its only been two days that he has been downstairs on his own, tomorrow morning may be different.

He has had just two accidents since he has been here and they were after the other pup visited. He always poos outside and has never been wet over night. However, my kitchen door is open from when I get up till I go to bed so its easy for him to go outside, I only had to take him out once on his first day here and he has taken himself out ever since. If you watch you can tell when they are needing to go... you will soon get the hang of it hp. :)
