It's putting it up like a stop signal. And not making eye contact or saying anything to him. She wants us to use it for everything, as a signal that it's over, or we don't have time to give him attention right now. And it worked a couple of times when he started growling, but once he loses it, he is just so set on getting you, it makes no difference.

Ah I understand that. We use something similar when Floss tries to blag another treat. I'm sure Arlo will get there but your patience is admirable.

Actually thinking about it more, it's not so much holding my hand 'up' as presenting the flat of my hand to her face that she understands as 'stop it now' (whatever 'it' is). It's more of a 'barrier' symbol in her face.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Been working for other things, and worked the first few times he growled. But when he went, it just gave him something to jump at and clamp his jaw round. She has an awful mark on her wrist.

Yeah, Rory is the same when he’s really overexcited - jumps up with his mouth already open and latches onto whatever he can (he does this far less often now, to be fair). I try to turn away from him, no eye contact, no reaction. He’ll generally then have a little think, and lie down or bring me one of his toys. (He is 5 though. He was a nightmare when he was younger.)

Better. But with advice from behaviourist, we retreated upstairs. So before he got anxious, we came upstairs and watched TV up here and left him downstairs, then after a while, I went back down and put him to bed. So if he is anxious about the bed time routine, it broke it up. Think it's about breaking the cycle, as obviously we can't just hide upstairs every night.
Nice to have a calm evening though. I needed it after last night.

Interestingly, as we feel it is because he knows we will be putting him in his crate and leaving him (he know has half of the crate door off so he can go in and out and has the run of the kitchen) we left a couple of our old hoodies in his crate that smell of us.
When we have been going in, he has been on the other bed in the kitchen and not on his crate, however this morning, he was in his crate with the hoodies.
