Just as a comparison, Luna is on Eden Country Cuisine with a little Butchers recipes in Gravy and I don't think she ever farted and smelt. I don't really hear her fart anyways. I am going to be making a change though to skinners superior as I am struggling to get the kg she lost when ill back on her so I may get some smells shortly!

As an aside this place palsvetlab.co.uk does stool samples for dogs (pet owners/small animal kits) and is much cheaper than what my vet charges. I am paying £130 for a test which these do for £55. Worth doing if every you suspect anything and don't want to waste a vet visit if it's nothing. You can then ring the vet with results and just get prescription if needed.

Wine Legs - I appreciate you probably want to get into puppy classes as much for the socialising as the training you will learn but if you are keen on training too the classes I go to will be reverting to completely online again this week I imagine. The trainer demonstrates with her own dog what we are supposed to do. During the summer we could then upload films of us doing whatever it was to a closed Facebook group for feedback from the trainer. Unfortunately for me controlling Wanda and recording whatever I am trying to do on my phone was not a huge success and we got lots of video of the carpet, my feet, the sky, some random thing in the garden but very little of Wanda demonstrating perfectly the task we had been set so I stopped bothering with the recording bit. We have class tomorrow so I can enquire what they are doing during lockdown if interested and put you in touch?

Eden kibble for breakfast ( two different working dog varieties) and raw in the evening here. Raffo insists on giving Jess a Kong for lunch. She's RUINED! Her 'tea' yesterday was a raw chicken thigh covered in delightful green sauce knocked up by me. The green sauce varies - yesterday was cauliflower staks and a few leaves, raw egg, bit of raw ginger, rosemary from the garden, some plain yog and a spoonful of Apple cider vinegar. All whizzed up in a blender. She loves it! In spiteof being RUINED (by Raffo) Jess is one of the least smelly dogs I've ever encountered. She's nearly eight and has never - honestly - farted, far as we know. Her breath is just doggie, but not horrific. She has many faults - all down to us -but ponginess is not one of them! Like me she eats a lotof vegetables! |

WL - when we first got Boots he also had a smelly bum but over the initial weeks we was with us it got a lot better. We think it was because he was nervous. Increasing fibre in Skye’s direct may help too. We add a handful of bran to Boots’ kibble plus a spoonful of mashed sweet potato and one of puréed squash. I was looking into food last week as I thought Boots had developed a grain allergy, he was scratching a lot and chewing his paw. Now he’s had a few days of calming down, the scratching has completely gone so it was probably due to stress rather than diet. No advice on training classes other than stressed dogs don’t learn well, we had Boots for four weeks before he went to training classes. We tried little bits at home too, with less success. Tho Skye being a collie is going to want to do things & be busy. |

Poppy - Golden Retriever (working strain) - 2 years Has taken to barking at aeroplanes, helicopters, microlights but ignores the doorbell and all the useful stuff!! Training going reasonably well and loves to go running/fell-walking with us. Fed on James Wellbeloved ... no stomach issues or 'emissions' and poo is easy (as in not sloppy!) to pick up on walks!

A good class is great of course - but a bad or wrong one for your dog can set you back lots (as well as costing!) There's loads you can do yourself and all the modern books and online stuff is positive reinforcement based as far as I can see.

I really didn't find our puppy class helpful and really disagreed on the way that the trainer dealt with things (advising us to 'smack' our dogs and 'knock them about' as it works and they stop the behaviour. My partner said she saw me flinch when she said that which was in the last lesson or we wouldn't have gone back) The socialisation side wasn't great either as it was arrive, start lesson and leave. Trainer came recommended highly as well so really disappointed. We went to 2 puppy parties which were really good and actually really helpful in training as could talk to other owners and it was done at a daycare centre who had a trainer in attendance as well. |

Speaking of training - this guy has some good stuff on youtube: I've not done scent training before but I might give it a go after watching that. |

Bootsey loves ‘find it’ but we’ve found 6-8 pieces is enough for him. After that he gets tired & frustrated, with less chance of him succeeding in his task, which defeats the object of the exercise.
