I’m pretty sure strychnine and brandy was used in the 1908 London Olympic marathon, as well. Another dodgy finish, as well.

Strychnine was common amongst early endurance cyclists, as was brandy. (And cocaine - I've just been revising on Wikipedia.) Then they got onto more sensible stuff, like amphetamines.

To paraphrase an early rider "How else do you expect us to do these things?"
