[As far as I know the best option is always to take out the maximum amount of local currency you can from an ATM, then pay for everything by cash. Using any kind of card for smaller transactions always works out very expensive.]

[Or even buy it before you go so you never get clobbered with the overseas-use ATM charge either. Allegedly pre-paid cards are supposed to give "near perfect" exchange rates on the day of use - which may or may not be a good thing!.]
