You can buy contact lenses on t'internet nowadays without having to prove that you've been to an optician within the requisite period of time and that you're ordering the correct lens strength according to your prescription. (This is A Very Good Thing for me, because I like to have one eye slightly undercorrected to avoid the need for varifocals.)

I mucked my eyes up using online prescriptions as measurements are apparently different between brands - well for whatever reason they were too flat and my eyes didn’t get enough oxygen so got dry and itchy. Took ages for the swelling to go down and for me to get a decent fit

I just bought the same brand I've been using for around 12 years. Wouldn't dare experiment without the advice of an optometrist who has examined my eyes.
