That's right FR. Stoosh, I walked every uphill for my first Fling (also my first Ultra, not counting the D33 which was meant to be a training run just three weeks earlier - hmm) and came in under 11 hours. You should take it easy and expect sub-10.
Actually, there's no reason not to pace it so that 9:30 hours is a posibility...
[there is a good reason not to aim for faster than this, which involves hours of pain and suffering, but let's not focus on that]

Think there may be a blog abou that Andy?!
I genuinely am going to run this one "to feel". I think pacing is incredibly hard unless you have done it before and are comparing with your own time. If it's your first time, then either comparing your pace with what you do on the road, or comparing with what other people's times are, is fraught. Some are stronger on hills or scrambly bits, others on flat n smooth. Some have the endurance but not speed, others speed but not the distance experience, etc.
You can get folk that are an hour behind 3 or 4 hours in, that can overtake you, if you have a mare later. Or vice versa, you can be going super slow at start and then have a storming finish and overtake half the field.
So, I am genuinely going to start slow and easy and see how I feel. Later in race I'll pick up the pace on any sections that I can. Anthing between 10 and 12 or 13 is fine! It's just a nice day out, imho! :-)G

Top comments _andy and HappyG.
As SB stated (I think earlier) on 50+ mile Ultra's we've both finished ahead of sub-3 marathoners.
That could be for a variety of reasons but possibly the three main reasons are:
[1] pacing [2] nutrition and hydration, totally different game if you're out for three times the length of time [3] my background is hill-walking and probably a better (hill)walker than a runner (*this may have helped me)

FR you're strong as an ox - that's got to help with these races. I'd still bet on Haile Gabrselassie to beat you to Tyndrum but there's many others of his build and speciality who may break down in the second half of the race.
The dilemma when running your first Fling / WHWR is if you're in absolute top condition. Then do you really *go for it*, not knowing how you're going to handle virgin territory / conditions, possibly risking a DNF or a very unpleasant day? If you're not on top condition leading up to the race, I would say then just get your first one in the bag (as I did in last year's WHWR) with a (mostly) comfortable and fun day and a nice finisher's medal / goblet.
My big WHWR target is 2015, my first V50, when I'm hoping to have more time available to train up to top condition for a real stab at sub-24. Well, we have to dream

Well the 2014 WHWR dream is still on. Even the snails and tortoises were making their way back to Aberdeen faster than me yesterday but I got to the finish line of the D33 in one piece. Just one more big hurdle - the Highland Fling race - and then full steam ahead.
The D33 is indeed an epic race - but I'll be very careful where I wear my new t-shirt - certainly not round my mother's house
Anyone interested in a slow 30 miler on Saturday on WHW?

I couldn't get away with that race t-shirt M1nty. If they did and ESRacing shirt with the runner logo on it, I'd have bought one.
You looked really fresh at the finish. Loads more in then tank, I'm sure. See you in a month! :-)G
