Only joking! I'm vegetarian too so I also do plants processed through ruminants (Milk, cheese, yoghurt, eggs). I'm the only non-carnivore in the house and socially it's just very difficult to take things that next step and go full vegan.

Is anyone going to tell Nellers that eggs don't come from cows ..?

I know, I know, but you get my point.

Anyway, what's the chicken equivalent of Ruminant? Avian isn't the same categorisation is it? Is there are categorisation for it?

I have a problem with "plant-based food" as a term. If, for example, my mother makes stovies, that will undoubtedly be plant-based as it is 80% potatoes and onions. It's just that the remaining 20% will be corned beef.

Don't get me started on "meat-free" and "The Vegetarian Butcher".

I've never really understood 'plant based' either.
Oil based paint isn't just oil, it's got all sorts of other things in it as well, so why assume that plant based is just plants?

Plant-based is an awful term to use around food. There are no descriptive words and it makes everything sound bland. I get your points above both, but I also think if words like fresh, ripe, seasonal, succulent, herbs, spices, delicious, piquant, tasty could be used it could sound more appealing. Plant-based sounds to me like an eating chore “get it eaten, it’s plant-based; what more do you want?” type thing.

I admit to hating the term for all of the above expressed reasons. I apologise for having used it. I blame it on chemo brain clouding my verbalising abilities 😎

Possibly, Red Squirrel, the issue is that "plant-based" is stuck onto so many "value added" highly processed and ultra processed foods, so many of your terms don't apply.

(Not that I never buy any. Convenience, innit ;-) I've just made and eaten soy mince and vegetables, with mash. Atavistic, perhaps, as I was brought up with mince and tatties. Also possibly the largest meal I've eaten in ages. I've been off my chuck, and it was very easy to eat.)

Ah, OK Dvorak. I don’t shop at places that sell highly-processed vegan foods, so that’s why I’m not seeing it used in that way.

I get food delivered from a couple of local farms and then also use small local shops.

Is it being used on fake cheeses, rashers; that type of thing?

I think Asda have a whole range of vegan food called "Plant Based". I see it a lot.

I tend not to buy anything that is in fact processed, but has to have a sticker on it to tell you it is plant-based. After all, nothing in the fresh veg and fruit section needs such stickers or labels.
