Interesting. Well FR, I'll be testing the science of your theory soon enough - I'm doing the L50 in July then precisely 5 weeks later the UTMB. Let's hope my powers of recovery are up to the job. I think it will be enough, last year I met several who used the L100 as a "UTMB warm-up".

NE, we are all different.
And we all develop both mentally and physically.
Sometimes it's the mental, belief side that's most important.
I remember a few years back I stated I couldn't run Edinburgh marathon as it was to close to London!
Now I don't blink running consecutive marathons back to back.

Great post FR
All running / training is personal but I think the further / more you do the more you need to listen to your body etc in terms of recovery. Everyone can do more than they think they can mind

I wonder do the facts bear this out about the cat and whw ? of the top of my head, Mike R run an excellent Cateran then a stunning whw last year,i remember Richie Cunningham came 2nd in the cat and ran a blinder of a whw then took 7 hours (yes seven! ) of his UTMB time to go sub 30 a couple months after the whw. Jo R , ran well at the cat & had stunning time at whw , as did Donald Sandeman & Karl Zeiner. (and that's without going through the results). Of course i'm sure you'll find some who did the opposite but then they may have just had a bad day. Got to be very careful interpreting these things.
Personally , seen to many good cat runs followed by whw run so I don't buy the cat to near to whw thing myself except for the risk of injury...for some folk... Certainly my best whw run was fling, Cat then whw (and that on only 9 weeks of running from a broken foot). That' with the D33 is what i will do next year when i try for a quicker whw (if i don't do something abroad instead in the lead up).
I'm not that much kop at this lark but looking about ,its clear some folk thrive on racing some don't, sometimes you have a good day and sometimes you don't. Be careful on the interpretation.
Don't read to much into it. Everyone's different & I've never seen a hard and fast rule in this lark i thought stuck.

To be fair, it's a bit like the HR being 220-age. It's fairly accurate for some and for others it a pile of smelly brown stuff.
If I had to make a call, I would go on the side of caution as there is always next year! The race (well most races, aren't going anywhere)

We were bought the new Richard Askwith book as a wedding present. He has some interesting things to say about running and the 'business' that's built up around it

Anyway back on topic, Stef and I need to get going with some training. We did a 7 or 8 mile walk on Sunday and a 5ml / 1000ft run on Tuesday. We've got more of the same, plus a wild swim planned for the BH weekend

I wouldn't take what an elite / top level runner can do and necessarily compare to myself.
