Question for the swimming experts... Why do people train wearing what looks like little paddles on their hands?

And it's hard? And apparently something about hand entry angle being more profound?

Sometimes they're also convex, so they significantly reduce your grip on the water.

They were very popular with the coaches at East Essex Tri. We were encouraged to buy the big yellow Finis ones. Hugely effective in developing chronic shoulder pain.

As I understand it (and I might be missing something here) there are two reasons for using hand paddles:
1) It adds to the amount of water you can "grip" so you can develop a stronger pull by swimming using them
2) it exaggerates the feel of the water making it easier to feel whether your hand is entering the water and pulling in the right direction.

I've never tried them but I've not tried any "toys" really. Very occasionally I grab a float and do a length or 2 of kicking. I've never used paddles or pull buoys or anything else.

They’re also handy if you’re one of those swimmers who likes to bring a bag of kit the size of Santa’s sack to the pool, and prove the adage that the more kit, the worse the swimmer….

Finis freestylers are good bits of kit (possibly the only other good thing they produced after the wetronome). Most other paddles are too big and/or lack finesse. Don’t let me catch you with paddles and find at the same time…
