The new pool was shut because over Christmas the school has changed the days it's open to the public but didn't bother to update the website. I wasn't the only one to make a fruitless journey there. Undaunted, I've been to the town leisure centre pool and it was not too busy and relatively clean, for a change. I wore my brand new Garmin 735xt, but either I got hopelessly muddled counting laps or the watch (set to 25m pool laps) overestimated how many laps I did. Does anyone know if this is a common thing with the 735, and if there is anything I can do to calibrate it? Or do I just carry on counting laps in my head? And please, what on earth is 'zwolf'? |

The lap counter can be rather flaky. Push off firmly from the ends and avoid colliding with anyone. It's Swolf and is a lap time/strokes taken thing: speedo.com |

Swolf is great. Worth doing drills just to try and reduce it. See how low you can get it for 100m. I’m usually 40, swimming well I occasionally see 39, when tired 41. Today’s swim I was on 40 until after halfway, then 41 after. That’s ok, some deterioration but kept it minor. |

I'm not confessing what mine was But in my defence, today was a 'recovery swim' after yesterday's hard run, and there were slow coaches in my way on many laps (it was the over 50's lane, which we have to stay in because we only pay £1.70 for the swim. I'd have to pay three times as much to swim in the other lanes #skinflint

Doesn't swolf encourage over gliding? Not that I need much encouragement, mind.

I would say no. Counting strokes does, but swolf is no of strokes + time. Overglide to reduce number of strokes and your time goes up, cancelling out the reduced strokes. My best swolf scores come with a decent turnover of long, powerful strokes. If I start windmilling with lots of inefficient strokes, or overgliding, or shortening strokes it creeps up. |
