It's also remarkably like being involved in left wing politics in the early 1980s. The Pythons knew what they were on about in Life of Brian.

'that' Life of Brian squabble is *very* Diocesan Synod. I'm told that General Synod is worse.
At least politics broadly has only two 'wings'. Mainstream CofE has four.

We used to refer to the 57 Varieties of Trotskyism.
One of them - the Posadists, IIRC - put forward the idea that socialism would be brought to earth by aliens, since they would be a more advanced race than us and therefore, by definition, socialist.

Mad.
To simplify to the point of parody, CofE has:
Liberal Anglo-Catholics (usually but not always members of 'Affirming Catholicism') - traditional 'smells-and-bells' worship, liberal/progressive views about women, sexuality, etc.
Conservative Anglo-Catholics (usually but not always members of 'Forward In Faith') - traditional 'smells-and-bells' worship, opposed to women priests, believe homosexuality is a sin. Tend to read the Daily Mail or at a pinch The Telegraph.
Liberal evangelicals - classic 'happy clappy' inclusive - believe Jesus loves everyone regardless of gender, sexual orientation, etc and are prepared to make a lot of noise about it - tend to view 'smells and bells' as somewhere between papism and witchcraft.
Conservative evangelicals - anti women priests, anti-gays, anti-icons, anti-anything-that-smells-of-papism - but with guitars and tambourines. American 'bible belt' churches kind of follow this model for the most part. Huge, huge part of the worldwide Anglican movement is like this.
FWIW I'm a paid-up member of Affirming Catholicism. I also suspect that Jesus would rather everyone was a liberal evangelical.
All above views my own, etc.
